Princess likes to chase Julian while he is fetching something and take it from him and hide it. That’s the extent of her idea of fetch. Back to Julian. How do you play fetch with a Dachshund. We started to throw the animal toys that he loves and tell him to fetch. He ran like crazy to get the toy and then instead of fetching it he wanted to tear it apart and get the squeaker out of it. He loves the squeaky toys however they do not last long. My daughter who is a professional dog trainer, you would think I would consult her more often, told me that since he is a hunter by breading he is hunting down his prey, catching it and proceeds to kill it. Getting to the squeaker means that the prey is dead. Now Princess does not do this.

Julian has the greater prey drive. So we started throwing one of those ropes. He loves them to. He kind of did the same thing, get to the rope and then he shakes it back and forth. So now what? We started letting him play with it, then we would chase him for a while. Making it like a game. We then would stop and ignore him. He responded by moving closer to us. We keep repeating this and in a short time he started bringing the rope back to us. He actually puts it in our hands now most of the time. We still chase him around the house with it because he really likes it but he has realized that if he wants to continue he needs to bring it back to us. What he was doing before was training us. My daughter says that they are smart and will try and get you to fit into their world if you let them. Sounds like what kids do.
