What to do with people shy long hair mini dachshund?
Hi, everybody.
I have 2yrs old male mini longhair dachshund. I have him since he was 10 weeks old. But since he was a little, he never was quite friendly. He had issue with another dogs as well but finally we got over that recently. But still having problem with people. He just bark and bark for new people. I know this from fear and he is saying "don't come near me". What can I do to help him get over that fear?
Try having friends/family that your dog is unfamiliar with come over and have some wonderful treats for your dog (treats that he really loves). When they come over, have them lightly throw the treats near you dog. Make sure they give no eye contact or any contact for now. When your outside have them walk by your dog and throw a treat. Keep repeating this process and hopefully your dog will think that good things happen when he sees new people. Eventually, he might be comfortable enough to come near the new person and be hand fed. Sometimes this method will not work. If your dog is still frightened of new comers, do not force him to interact with them. Just let him approach if he wants too.
Good luck!

Try taking him to parks and walks on a LEASH. Try exposing him to new things so he will get used to new people.

Years of experiance with dogs
invite a few friends over and have them bring a few doggie treats with them. after a few times of the dog knowing that new people are going to give him treats it will sink in that new people are good.
good luck

Well, here's a blunt answer. No such thing as a mini doxie. They are the runts of the litter, due to poor breeding. Only BYB's breed such a thing. Chances are you will have problems forever due to poor breeding.

He needs some socialization with people. More walks in the park will help him get over that. Good luck!

Hi Tak I have a 1 year old long haired mini dachshund - female. Dachshunds have a tendancy to be aggressive unless well socialized. My female does not like men. She barks and raises her hairs. I take her to our city off-leash dog park & in that environment she does not bark at men. She will not let men touch her but at least she is getting the idea that men are not going to harm her. It takes patients and a lot of time. Dachshunds tend to only like their immediate family members and need to be brought out into public and gently pursuaded to be with other people. The more you socialize, the better his attitude will be. Take him for walks where people are sure to be and give treats when people pass and he doesn't react strongly. Make him sit as people pass you and give him treats. Soon he will see that people are not bad.
