How Do You Handle Your Mini Dachshund's Digging Instinct?

Is it a major problem? Can they be tought not to dig? Where do they like to dig?
I don't have one yet, but I'm thinking of getting one…

I have a mini Dachshund and i encourage him to dig because it makes him happy!! I have a special spot just for him because i know Dachshund love to dig.You could buy a sand pit and fill it with dirt or sand and bary toys and treats so he digs only in the sand pit. That way he doesn't mess up your yard or garden.Another thing to do is fill up all the holes he dug with gravel and then dirt so he doesn't dig there eny more and only digs in the sand pit.

Doxies were bred to go underground. It's going to take some serious training to help them kick the digging habit. I have a mini doxie and I do not let her go outside unsupervised. That keeps her from digging.

dachshunds were bread to go into burrows so digging is natural i would buy a sand box and barry some toys and bones in it. that way gets their exercise but doesnt dig any holes.

I am going to be getting a miniature dachshund soon! They are such a wonderful breed.
When you see your dog digging or you find a hole grab your dog firmly by the neck put its nose in the hole and him it a pop on the butt(be firm not mean). Your dog will learn that it gets punished and won't dig much longer.
    Good Luck!

Dachshunds were bred to dig – that's their function, to go "to ground", dig out their prey and kill it.
If you don't want a digging dog what on earth are you doing with the greatest digging breed of all?

Only thing you can do is keep your dachsie on leash outside so you contol what he does.

To yell at a dachsie or be angry when he digs is like being angry at a fish for swimming – ridiculous.

Satine —- do NOT get a dachshund. You are no animal lover if you would get a breed that digs by nature and then punish it for doing what it was bred for. Get a poodle, a yorkie — anything but a dachshund. This is a hunting dog with prey drive — and it digs, digs, digs.

give the dog his own place to dig.

My mom's little dog likes to dig.. mom lets her dig out in the veggie garden.. it satisfies her urge to dig, gives her exercize, and she doesnt bother the rest of the yard.

Have you done any research on dachshunds? Dachshunds (both mini and standard) are bred to dig, their earthdogs, meaning they are bred to hunt under the earth and are very strong diggers.

Some dogs dig out of frustration, lack of exercise and mental stimulation.

If your not interested in having a digging dog, then find another breed.

I have a dachshund and she loves to dig.also digging helps her with her nails in between her groomer visits. I think the other post are right about giving them a special spot . My Buttercup goes right to that place and goes at it.
