How Do I Get My Australian Retriever to Play Nice With a New Dachshund Puppy?

The retriever wants to play but is just too rough and won’t stop playing when the dachshund starts barking. They are both puppies. The dachshund was a surprise gift to me so I didn’t have time to read up on techniques.

Often the dach is barking to egg the other dog on, like "Come on, I dare ya". If the larger dog hurts the little guy he’ll yelp and the big dog will stop and remember he bit too hard. I had a friend worried to death her big dog would hurt her new kitten. The two played all the time and she was constantly hollering at the dog. I kept telling her the cat would go hide if it was too much. He stayed and jumped on the dog and wanted more. Finally, she realized they were having a great time and no one was getting hurt. Don’t worry, just because a big mouth grabs the little one’s head doesn’t mean it’s war. That’s what they use instead of hands.
