My husband and I are thinking about adopting a rescue dachshund this spring. He and I work 8 hours a day, will a dachsund be destructive while we are gone? What is their overall temperment?

What Type of a Dog Is a Dachshund?
Friday, March 27th, 2009Dachshund Chews Up Clothing?
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009I have a 4-year-old rescued, female dachshund.
She has been chewing up all sorts of clothing (tank tops, underwear , bras, sports bras). She seems to specifically like the stretchy, elastic band part of the aforementioned clothing.
She hasn't chewed up any of my husband's clothing or items, only mine. She isn't only chewing things on the floor, she has even pulled things out of baskets to chew on them. All items of clothing she has chewed up have been worn, or are dirty.
Does anyone know a way to discourage these chewing habits?
Also, why would she showing preferences towards my clothing items, and not showing any interest in my husbands?
Puppies, like babies, tend to explore the environment by putting things in their mouths. The problem, of course, is that not everything a pup finds lying around is appropriate to chew, and many things can be downright dangerous.

17 Year Old Mini-Dachshund Gets Confused and Lost in Yard.?
Monday, March 9th, 2009Hi – I have a very old Dachshund, she is 17 years old now and for her age is in good health. Lately she wanders around her yard and she looks a bit confused, I don't think she knows where she is going sometimes. Last night she got herself corned into an area she couldn't get out of and I had to rescue her, and today she got stuck on the side of the house twice.
She always seems happy when I turn up and follows me back inside. I think she is going a bit potty, I guess there is nothing I can do?
I'm grateful for all the responses – this evening was not much better for my dog, she kept wandering all evening and at midnight she finally fell asleep (about 20 minutes ago) – I phoned a relative who is a Vet and she wants me to but her on Anipryl immediately.
I'm really surprised how quickly she has deteriorated, the last few days in particular.
Not true!
There are veterinary drugs available to help.
Schedule an appointment.
Best wishes!
PS. If your yard's not fenced I don't think I'd let her out alone anymore!
I Just Rescued a 2 Year Old Dachshund..?
Friday, February 27th, 2009And hes all in all a very good dog!
I am just having a hard time getting him to go to the bathroom outside. He sniffs my whole house like crazy, and then sits down. When we go outside, he takes about 30 minutes to sniff around, and then doesnt go!
I just got him yesterday, and he has gone #2 in my house 3 times now. And #1 only once. I am worried this will be hard to house train him.
Do you have any suggestions, like the puppy pads or newspapers? He is neutered, and does not pee when he gets excited (which is a plus!).
Thanks!
Dachshunds are stubborn, hard to housebreak, and extremely food-motivated. You need to use treats when they "go" outdoors, crate them when you're not at home and take them out immediately when you get home, and be consistent.
When they start to "go" indoors, lift them up WHILE THEY ARE "GOING" (dogs hate this) and carry them outdoors. That's so that they get the point it's not being outside that's "good," or going potty that's "good," but GOING POTTY OUTSIDE that's good.
Good for you for adopting. Other than the housebreaking and stubbornness, the dachshund is an exceptionally awesome dog.
Annual Checkup Costs for a Dachshund? ?
Thursday, February 26th, 2009I’m looking into adopting a miniature or standard dachshund within the next month or two. The woman that called me from the rescue told me to expect to spend $300 per year. Now, I also have two cats, and when I take them in for annual checkups (rabies vaccination, FIV, heartworm check up, fecal, etc), it costs about $65. So $300 sounds a bit much to me. Our last dog’s annual checkups cost about $75-80. Any one have an ideas on this cost? I want to have a healthy dog, but $300 on one vet visit?
I am not adopting a puppy, I am adopting a young adult – senior dachshund, already spayed/neutered and is up to date on shots, vaccinations and heartworm treatment (if applicable).
I live in NYC and have never spent $300 on a wellness vet visit. The cost of a healthy dachshund would be approx the same, I would think, as your currently spending on your cats. Yearly checkup, vaccinations (including rabies) heartworm etc probably cost me around $150. I also don't do yearly vaccines, I do every 3 years and as the dog gets older I do titers.
Mind you I have spent way over $300 on different emergencies that happen every so often. Bloat, vomiting/direahh, slow digestion, teeth, etc. That's just part of dog owning and since your a cat owner, I'm sure you've had to make these occasional and unexpected vet visits.
Why don't you contact your current vet and ask him how much he'd charge for yearly wellness visit for a dog? I would just "yes" her and continue with your current vet, if you like him and his prices are right.
Small Breed Dog That Licks Sheets? We Rescued a Longhaired Dachshund 10yrs +Old, She Licks the Sheets a Lot.?
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009she was obviolsly treatedly badly. and after a month we noticed she licks our sheets, flannel or not anyone ever hear of this or why she might do it? I dont leave the house w/o her …she follows me all the time even follows me to the bathroom
I think there is always an answer to a behavior even in our pets. When a dog licks or sniffs, they are finding your scent on objects. Sometimes it may be that you use a fragrant fabric softener or laundry detergent. My daughter had a cat that always licked my hairspray. She was very much loved and like us humans, we all have our little idiosyncrasies. She appears to be having issues with anxiety separation. It wouldn't be uncommon for her to follow you everywhere but this isn't really a good thing. It takes time and patience to learn, but you should be able to leave without the dog all the time. It is the same premise if you have a child that grows up and is still clinging to you. It isn't healthy for either of you. Your pet should learn the word "no" in a firm tone and stick to it. There will come a time when you must leave and if this behavior goes unchecked, it will be difficult or nearly impossible to leave her without feeling guilty. If you are married or get married, will you allow the dog to come first? That's not good for a relationship. I am so sorry the dog is mistreated but training and kind discipline is necessary for both your sakes. She will be certain of your love and commitment to her if she hasn't figured that already. I love pets , but wouldn't allow a pet to control me or where I go. Leave her for a short time and even if she barks or cries, do it. Leave for a short time and gradually increase the time. Make sure you show her love and reward her for being good. You need your privacy even from her. Good luck and if you can't help her, I would find or take her to training classes.
How Can I Teach My Six Year Old Dog How to Play?
Friday, February 20th, 2009We rescued our beagle/dachshund mix dog about four years ago and she had been living in a foster home with a lot of other dogs for about two years. She isn't interested in balls or toys and playing with a toy while ignoring her doesn't phase her at all. She isn't a very energetic dog, and never has been despite the beagle in her. She doesn't chase animals or anything but she does track things sometimes. She loves peanut butter and meat. Any ideas would be great! Thanks
Just continue to encourage her and praise her.
I have a dog that was kept caged the first year of her life and she had no idea how to play or what toys were. She still isn't a big player, but what I did was got down on the floor with her and used an excited voice with lots of praise as I tossed a ball or wiggled a rope. Like I said, she still isn't big on playing, but at least she will play with a ball now.
Since you say that your dog does track, you can teach her to "find it". First, she must learn "stay", though. Put her in a different room and tell her to stay. Hide several treats in another room and have her go find them. Don't forget to praise her when she finds it! At first, don't hide them too well. You don't want to set her up for failure. Make it easy for her to find at first.
I Have a Rescued Dachshund Who Will Guard the Person He Is Sitting With.?
Saturday, February 14th, 2009For example if my husband is sitting on the couch and "Charles" is sitting next to him and I walk into the room Charles will start to growl. If I approached and extend my han Charles will bite and has several times. He also does it occasionally with bones. I use a water bottle to spray him once which generally works. This dog was abused and is very loving in other ways. Do you have any other suggestions? I don't think the problem can be fixed but the water bottle is very helpful. Thank you Martha Moretti
He seems to guard anyone who he has spent some time with. Not just my husband. Now if we are all interacting to gether this does not happen. Also we have three dogs in total and although he is not pack leader he would like to be. I am not sure there is a definitive approach . The way I live with it is to be very aware and if someone comes to visit everyone is crtaed for safety sake. Even though he is rescued and (man caused many of these bad behaviors in rescued animals) it is ultimately my responsibility to see that no body gets bitten especially strangers that enter the home. If I had it to do over again I may have gone with a puppy who does start with these behaviors however I thought it best to help a dog in need. Thank you for your information and please feel free to continue to respond. This is my first issue with this yahoo forum. Martha
Does he only growl at you, or at your husband as well? If it's only you, it sounds like he thinks you are lower in the pack then himself. You should read about dominance and pack leader training. There is tons of stuff on the internet. I also strongly believe in the Nothing in life is free approach where the dog isn't just given things but has to work for them. It worked wonders for my little dachshund who was a little dominant when I first got him. Now he waits for permission before eating, going out, getting on the couch, etc. and the possessiveness and dominance is gone.
How Do You Find a Reputable Breeder?
Wednesday, February 11th, 2009I am looking to buy a Miniature dachshund & there are so many breeders ! Should I look in specialist magazines ?
I'm definitely getting one from a breeder not a shelter. I have 2 rescue cats & they are very skittish so I can not risk having a dog with behavioral issues as well.
Thank you so much !
Also I'm from England if that helps ?
Of course I will meet the parents when I am looking at the puppy ! My parents have said a definite no to rescue dogs.
, But its their house their rules I suppose,
I'm not sure with getting a puppy shipped overseas as I would have to meet the parents and the breeder to make sure it's comming from a good home.
Thankyou so much for the answers so far & the Dachund club website really helped ! xxx
This site I linked is the UK Miniature Dachshund Club. You can call them for a breeder referral list.

Whats the Healthiest Dog Food for My Dog?
Monday, February 9th, 2009My sister-in-law rescued a 4 yr old Dachshund Mix from the pound, and gave the dog to my son. The dog as all it's shoots and is healthy. We also have a cat in the house and he is eating up all her food. The wife thinks that we should get wet food for the dog, since he loves to eat cat food.
… I want to make sure that we give him for what is healthy. Suggestion please.
