Dachshund Training
Dachshunds are similar to many other breeds of dogs in the sense that they are pack animals by nature. A pack animal’s first order of business when coming into a new pack is to determine where exactly he falls on the pack hierarchy. This means that when you bring a new Dachshund into your home, it is very important that you let him know who is in charge of the house. (In case there is any confusion here, the answer to who is in charge is YOU!) Once your dog accepts the fact that you are the leader of his new pack, he will be much more willing to submit to your authority and follow your commands. Dachshund training will consist of housebreaking as well as Dachshund obedience training. Both of these processes will work more effectively with the use of a crate.
Crate Training
Crate training has become a popular technique in the past decade for housebreaking as well as other forms of Dachshund training. A crate offers your dog a safe haven for sleeping, or to escape the noise and confusion of a busy household. With a warm blanket or towel for your Dachshund to snuggle into, your dog will undoubtedly learn to see his crate as a friendly place instead of a cold and harsh prison that some dog owners may envision. Use of a crate during Dachshund potty training will teach your puppy bladder control by confining him to his crate for short periods of time that gradually become longer as his bladder matures. A crate will offer a place for your dog to stay when you are not home, so that you don’t need to worry about your dog getting bored and destructive while you are away. When used correctly, crates can be a positive tool in Dachshund training.
Dachshund Potty Training
Housebreaking your Dachshund puppy will require time, persistence and plenty of patience on your part, but it probably won’t take your pup long to figure out the process. Dachshunds are very intelligent creatures that can understand your expectations of them fairly quickly. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always mean that they will be as quick to comply, since a stubborn streak is also a characteristic of these dogs. This is where patience and persistence will come into play; coupled with plenty of praise and positive reinforcement for a “job” done right.
Dachshund Obedience Training
Dachshunds can be a bit ornery to train, since their stubborn and independent streak can affect how your dog views your authority and the rules of the house. Just as in housebreaking, Dachshund obedience training will take plenty of persistence and patience on your part. Positive reinforcement should always be the motivating force in getting your doxie to comply with your wishes. Punishment such as striking your dog or locking him in his crate for disobedience will result in a frightened dog – not an obedient one.
Dachshund training can be a challenge, but it is hard to get frustrated with those big brown eyes looking up at you!
